The Benefits of Reciting OM MANI PADME HUM

Date of Advice:
Date Posted:

Rinpoche sent this advice to a student about the amazing merit of reciting OM MANI PADME HUM, the mantra of Chenrezig [Skt: Avalokiteshvara].

My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,
How are you?

Please do this daily practice, The Method to Transform a Suffering Life into Happiness (Including Enlightenment). That would be very good. I am requesting this, and you can relate it to your day-to-day life. Try to live with this motivation, bodhicitta. This is the best life, the happiest life which is most beneficial for all sentient beings, and by the way it brings you happiness. This would be extremely, extremely good.

If you can, recite OM MANI PADME HUM mantra. It purifies all the defilements collected from beginningless rebirth; it is unbelievable purification. It even purifies the karma of a fully ordained monk who has broken the four root vows: killing a human being, having sexual intercourse, telling lies about realizations and stealing. Having broken these four root vows creates the karma to be reborn in the hell realms, however, just reciting OM MANI PADME HUM purifies that negative karma. It is unbelievably powerful, unbelievably powerful, and we collect unbelievable merits, even if we recite the mantra without the motivation of bodhicitta.

By reciting OM MANI PADME HUM we collect more merit than the number of drops of water in the ocean; more than the number of snowflakes in a snowfall; more than the number of drops of water in rainfall; more than the number of sand grains in the Pacific Ocean. If we do it with bodhicitta then it creates the cause of happiness up to enlightenment and we are able to bring all sentient beings to enlightenment by purifying our negative karma and collecting more than skies of merit.

Whoever recites the Chenrezig mantra—long, middle and short—when we go in the ocean or wash with water, like in a river, then all the water that touches us, if that water then touches any creature, any sentient being—animals, fish, whales, snakes, even insects we can’t see with our eye, only with a machine, all those living beings—it is then the last rebirth that they will have from womb, egg, heat and moisture. They won’t have to experience that again and they will be reborn in a pure land. Like that, it’s a way to free numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering. Not only to free them from the lower realms but to go up to enlightenment, and in their future lives to be born in a pure land.

By reciting the Mani mantra one thousand times, any wind that touches our body and then goes away and touches other insects or people, that wind is able to purify the negative karma collected from beginningless rebirth. It gets purified and they don’t get reborn in the lower realms; they get reborn in a pure land instead. It’s unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable. This means all the water in the oceans, not just the ocean at Aptos, but all the oceans and even the deepest, deepest oceans where people have not yet been.

Also, if we stand on a hill or tower so that many people can see us—if one thousand or ten thousand or a billion people look at us—then they all get purified and they don’t get reborn in the lower realms. The benefit they get is unbelievable.

It’s the same when other sentient beings touch us—they get purified.

One time at Land of Calm Abiding there were lots of flies that landed on me while I was reciting a text to some horses. This was to purify the horses and to leave positive imprints. A lot of flies landed on my head, so I tried to think that they would get benefit as I had recited many Mani mantras. I tried to think that they would get purified due to the benefits of the Mani mantra. It is unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable; it brings great success and unbelievable merits.

This is what brings happiness in our life and it’s a way to create unbelievable merits and to benefit sentient beings. Generating great compassion for all sentient beings is a quick way to achieve enlightenment. Without compassion there is no enlightenment, therefore this is a quick way to achieve enlightenment. How quickly we achieve enlightenment depends on how deep our compassion is, so it all depends on our compassion. This is why Maitreya Buddha became a bodhisattva, but Guru Shakyamuni Buddha became a buddha first.

In the past life of Shakyamuni Buddha, when he was a bodhisattva, in Namo Buddha, in Nepal, he was walking with the bodhisattva Maitreya and they saw a starving mother tiger with her four cubs. Guru Shakyamuni, who was a bodhisattva at that time, saw this and generated bodhicitta. Later he came back to offer his body to the starving tiger and her cubs, but the tiger was very weak and she could not even eat him, so he took a blade of grass and cut his own neck so the blood would flow out for the tiger and her cubs. This was due to Guru Shakyamuni’s bodhicitta, which was very strong, and that is why he became a buddha before Maitreya Buddha. The five tigers became the first five disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha when he first turned the wheel of Dharma, after attaining enlightenment.

Therefore, generating compassion and bodhicitta is the quickest way to achieve enlightenment. By realizing this, it is so incredible. Of course, this is the cause of all success, including all temporary success and liberation from the oceans of samsaric sufferings, and all temporary happiness up to enlightenment. By developing compassion for all sentient beings our life becomes very beneficial, amazing, amazing.

Also if you can, recite the Medicine Buddha mantra, recite the seven Medicine Buddhas mantra. Recite each name mantra for success. People think this practice is only for healing, but it is for all the success including enlightenment. How it helps is unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable, for all the success, temporary and ultimate—ultimate freedom, liberation from the oceans of samsaric sufferings for ourselves and for all sentient beings, and full enlightenment—and then to bring all others to full enlightenment, so it brings all the success. It is amazing, amazing, unbelievable. While there is a method, if we don’t do what the Buddha taught then there is so much suffering, therefore we must do it while we can.

Thank you very much. If you have any questions you can contact me. This is best way to take care of your life. Other than that, live your life with a good heart as much as possible. When you are eating, walking or doing your job, do it for the benefit of all sentient beings as much as possible.

With much love and prayers ...

Two Essential Daily Practices

Date of Advice:
Date Posted:

In this letter, Rinpoche advised the benefits of two important daily practices: recitation of OM MANI PADME HUM and the Medicine Buddha’s mantra and names. Rinpoche said this is general advice for everyone.

My most dear, most kind, most precious wish-fulfilling ones,
You are both most welcome to enlightenment, so that means goodbye to the lower realms and samsara and lower nirvana for both of you. You must know you two are the most fortunate beings.

Now your daily practices: a very important one is reciting OM MANI PADME HUM mantra and also Medicine Buddha mantra and names. Chenrezig and Medicine Buddha are very important.

Regarding Chenrezig, by reciting OM MANI PADME HUM it purifies negative karma and obscurations collected from beginningless rebirths and we collect extensive merits. This is even reciting without bodhicitta. Even reciting one mala purifies negative karmas created from beginningless rebirths as well as all the obscurations, and we collect merit more than the drops [of water] in the Pacific Ocean, more than the sand grains of the Pacific Ocean, more than the grasses growing on the mountains and on the lands of the earth. It is unbelievable.

If we recite OM MANI PADME HUM mantra with bodhicitta just one time, we collect more than skies of merit. Then in particular if we generate compassion for the sentient beings, the particular benefit is that it helps us achieve enlightenment more quickly, the stronger we generate compassion. To achieve enlightenment more quickly is not just for our own happiness, like taking drugs, it is not like that, just to have some sort of bliss out. It is not like that. It is so that we can free the numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric sufferings of the six realms and then we can bring everyone to full enlightenment, buddhahood, the peerless happiness, the total cessation of all the obscurations and completion of all the realizations. That is unbelievable, unbelievable, the greatest benefit. This is what we need in the life.

If we recite OM MANI PADME HUM every day, however many we recite, it is most unbelievably, unbelievably meaningful. It makes our life beneficial for the numberless sentient beings, the numberless hell beings, numberless hungry ghosts and numberless animals. This means every single animal living in the ocean, large like a mountain or so small that we can't see it, but only through a machine, a microscope, and also every single ant that we see on the road to our house. Our life is benefiting every single maggot, every single tick, every single mosquito, every single worm, and also benefiting every single human being, every single sura and every single asura being, and also not just talking about this world, but numberless worlds. It is unbelievable. Recite OM MANI PADME HUM and generate compassion for every single one of these beings; generate the motivation, whether we have realized bodhicitta or not. Generate strong compassion and dedicate the mantras for every single sentient being, even if we don't have actual realization of bodhicitta.

My mother didn’t know the Tibetan alphabet, she couldn't read texts, so when lamas explained commentaries from the texts, she didn’t understand. She only knew the simple advices like how to sit in front of a lama with your hands in your lap, or to not pass over two beads on the mala, but to count the mantras one bead by one bead and so on, things like that. This is what she told me. So when the lamas gave commentaries on the texts, she would recite OM MANI PADME HUM. This is what she did in Tibet, when Tibet was free. She went to Tibet to listen to teachings from the root guru of Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche.

Even though she couldn't read the texts, she had a hundred times greater compassion than me, who can read texts and speak a little bit of Dharma. Not only her, but I also saw older ladies who normally do nyung nä, the Chenrezig retreat. I am sure they can't read texts, but they have strong faith in the guru, Chenrezig, and they recite mantras. The ceremony is done by the monks who lead the nyung näs or by the Ngapas, who read the texts. Most of the ladies and men who attend cannot read the letters or the texts, so they recite OM MANI PADME HUM. This is how they do nyung näs. I met one old lady who normally does nyung näs and she recites many mantras every day, so even just speaking one or two times to her, I felt she had great compassion. Therefore you can see how important it is to recite OM MANI PADME HUM.

I'm thinking to write a book that has different Chenrezig prayers, maybe seven or eight different prayers and practices, so it can be used every day to recite different prayers to Chenrezig, before reciting OM MANI PADME HUM, to inspire devotion to Chenrezig. I haven't written it yet, but I hope to soon. It will be in Tibetan and English as well as in other languages. I think this is very, very important. In the meantime you can recite whatever short prayer to Chenrezig that you know before you recite the mantras every day.

The other very important practice for success is Medicine Buddha. The most important, highest success is achieving enlightenment for sentient beings. That is the most important thing, then by actualizing the path this brings other success in the life—just by the way, it happens. So this practice helps to bring any success, such as helping the Buddha’s teachings and sentient beings. Therefore it is very important to recite the seven Medicine Buddhas’  names, and if you include the name of the Buddha it is eight names. [You can find links to the sadhana in the FPMT catalogue.]

This practice is unbelievably powerful, as the Medicine Buddhas have made prayers for all the successes and to overcome all the problems, so that happens to us.

These two practices are very important to do every day. Recite OM MANI PADME HUM mantra and Medicine Buddha mantra and if you can, recite the seven names of Medicine Buddha seven times each day. If you can, recite one mala of the Medicine Buddha mantra. Of course you can do more if you like. If you can, do one mala or ten malas of OM MANI PADME HUM mantra every day.

If we do ten malas of OM MANI PADME HUM then it carries blessings for every generation up to seven generations of our family, to not get born in the lower realms, to have higher rebirths and to meet the holy Dharma again. When we die, when our body is burned, the smoke from that purifies the negative karma of any sentient being who is touched by it.

When we go in the ocean, like for a swim, when our body touches the water, then any sentient being in the rest of the ocean receives blessings—that means any sentient being who drinks the water or touches the water, even human beings playing in the water. All their obscurations and negative karmas are purified and they don’t get reborn in the lower realms; they don’t get rebirth in a womb, by egg, by heat and so forth; this is what is mentioned. Then all those sentient beings whom the water has touched are always with the buddhas and bodhisattvas from life to life. This is after a person who recites ten malas a day goes into the water, just from the water touching their body. So it is an unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable blessing.

Same thing, if the wind touches a person who recites ten malas a day, when that wind touches any other being it has blessings, it purifies obscurations and negative karma, and they don’t get reborn in the lower realms. This includes the breath when it goes out and touches somebody, for example, if we blow on animals, insects, by our breath touching them it purifies their negative karma and they get a higher rebirth.

The life practices I have sent you are all to help you actualize the path to enlightenment. To achieve full enlightenment yourself and then to free the numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric sufferings and bring them to the peerless happiness, buddhahood.

Thank you very much. Don’t worry, this is to plan well, what to practice, for however many years, months, weeks or hours that you have life to live. This is how to make your life most beneficial for sentient beings.

The Kadampa geshes advised to aim far to achieve enlightenment for sentient beings. Therefore not only thinking about this month or this year, and then not having long-term patience. If we only think about this year, then we try very hard, but sooner or later we will completely stop because it is taking a long time. So not thinking like that. It is like the Tibetan example of a flea jumping up and down, but the turtle goes very slowly and steadily. It is the turtle that reaches the mountain by continuing on.

The Kadampa geshes also advised to extend the mind. This means to do all the preliminary practices, meditation on the lamrim and all these practices, studying Dharma and so on, to extend the mind. At the same time not squeezing the mind, but relaxing the mind. A third advice is to relax the mind, so not getting uptight, then getting lung disease and having many problems  so that we can't continue, then completely stopping everything until some catastrophe happens. Then we remember death and we remember the practices.

With much love and prayers,

Benefits of OM MANI PADME HUM

Date of Advice:

Rinpoche sent this advice on the benefits of the precious mantra OM MANI PADME HUM, along with a gift of the mantra banner.

I wanted to offer you this printed mantra of OM MANI PADME HUM.

This mantra contains all the teachings of the Buddha. It is the Compassion Buddha’s mantra; the six-syllable Compassion Buddha’s mantra, the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of all the Buddha’s compassion. This mantra is to guide us and to free us from the lower realms; to free us from samsara and lower nirvana, and bring us to peerless happiness, buddhahood—the cessation of all the obscurations and completion of all the realizations.

A bhikshu, a fully ordained monk, who has broken even the four root vows, is liberated from the hell realms by reciting this mantra.

This mantra has so much power. If you recite it just seven times, then one hundred eons of past negative karma are purified. If you recite it twenty-five times, then one thousand eons of negative karma are purified. By reciting one mala of this mantra (108 times), then forty thousand eons of negative karma are purified. It’s unbelievable.

Recite ten malas a day if you can, and pray to Chenrezig. Think that nectar is coming from Chenrezig and purifying your negative karma collected from beginningless rebirth. Think that you receive all of Chenrezig’s qualities. If you have received the Chenrezig great initiation, you can think that Chenrezig absorbs into you and you become Chenrezig.

So it blesses you. If you are living a married life, up to seven generations that come from you are blessed. If you pray to Chenrezig, your family will receive blessings for up to seven generations and they won’t be reborn in the lower realms.

If you wash in a river, a lake or the ocean after reciting ten malas a day and praying to Chenrezig, as I mentioned, then the water that touches your body when you wash becomes blessed water, because of the power of the mantra you have recited. Then anybody else who washes in that water—any people or animals that wash in or drink that water—even their negative karma is purified and they won’t get reborn in the lower realms at all, not in the hell realms, animal realms or hungry ghost realms.

By reciting this mantra you will never get reborn from the womb, egg (chickens), by heat (like lice) and so forth. This is the last birth from a womb; you will never get this kind of rebirth again. You will always go to enlightenment and you will always meet the buddhas and bodhisattvas, from life to life. You are so incredibly, incredibly fortunate and will be able to benefit more and more sentient beings until you reach enlightenment. So it is unbelievably, unbelievably powerful.

Even reciting OM MANI PADME HUM without bodhicitta motivation—without the ultimate good heart, wanting to free sentient beings from the oceans of samsara suffering and bring them to the peerless happiness, buddhahood—even if you don’t recite the mantra with bodhicitta, it is incredibly powerful.

If you recite OM MANI PADME HUM you collect merit (good luck) more than the drops of water from the oceans; you collect merit more than the number of drops of rain when it rains; more than the snowflakes that fall; more than the sand grains of the Pacific Ocean. It is unbelievable, unbelievable, and if you recite the mantra with bodhicitta, you collect more than skies of merit, good luck. There is unbelievable purification and the particular benefit is that you develop compassion for every sentient being. That is one best thing.

That makes you achieve enlightenment quickly, as you generate stronger compassion for others. It is an easy way to be born in a pure land of the Buddha. In some pure lands you can achieve enlightenment and in Amitabha’s pure land you will never be reborn in the lower realms and after one lifetime you will achieve enlightenment.

Even by seeing this mantra it purifies the five very heavy negative karmas without break. The five heavy negative karmas are killing one’s father or mother of this life, killing an arhat (who is free from samsara), drawing blood from a buddha and causing disunity among the Sangha. By creating such heavy negative karma, you would be reborn in the lowest hot hell, the inexhaustible hot hell. You would be born there, where the suffering is the heaviest in samsara and the length of life is one intermediate eon. If the karma is not finished, even if this world ends, still you are reborn in another universe, in another hell realm. Therefore the other lighter negative karmas are delayed, and that is why these are called the five heavy negative karmas without break.

By seeing this mantra these heavy negative karmas are purified. Each time we see this mantra, the ten nonvirtuous karmas which we normally create also get purified and the seed of enlightenment is planted.

It is so good. We are very lucky to have it in the house and to hang it up so people can see it. It is very precious, it is the wish-fulfilling mantra, OM MANI PADME HUM.

Namgyalma Protection

Rinpoche sent this advice, along with two Namgyalma protection amulets to a student.

If you wear Namgyalma protection it purifies you all the time, so it's good to wear it, but don't put it in your trouser pocket because the protection will go down. Tie it around your neck or put it in a higher pocket, and when you prostrate, put it behind you so it doesn't go on the ground.

If you have the Namgyalma mantra in your house, it is so powerful for cats and pigs, and for everyone, believer or non-believer. Everyone gets purified, so that means if anyone dies they will get a good rebirth. Have it in the house, even in your husband’s room—not down low, but up high so that it can purify your husband all the time. Then because the house becomes so holy, outside when the sun is shining and the reflection of the house touches people or animals, their negative karma is purified and they have a higher rebirth after the death. If the Namgyalma mantra is on a mountain, the whole maintain becomes holy and the negative karma of anyone who is on the mountain is purified and they will have a good rebirth after death.

When you drive a car, so many ants and insects get killed, but when you have Namgyalma mantra in the car so many insects will have a higher rebirth, even when they are killed by the car. Also anybody who touches the car, their negative karma is purified just by touching the outside of the car. Another thing is when dogs or people die, by touching the body with the mantra they get a good rebirth, so that is very important. Even if it happens that your husband dies, this mantra is one of the best and most reliable things. You can put it on his body.

I am very happy. It reminds me that you are very goodhearted human being and that is why you are dedicated to your husband, taking care of what he needs. Pray day and night for your husband and anyone else you wish to pray for.

Benefits of Chenrezig Mantra

Rinpoche sent this letter with advice about the benefits of reciting OM MANI PADME HUM to a student’s mother after she wrote to thank him.

My very dear, most kind, most precious, most wish-fulfilling mother,

Thank you very much for your kind letter. I just arrived from Mongolia, where they did a 108 million Mani Retreat. There were more than 60 Westerners, mostly nuns, and many Mongolians, who did extremely well. They recited 108 million OM MANI PADME HUM mantras.

This is incredible, unbelievable purification, purifying negative karma collected from beginningless time. This is the way to collect most extensive merits up to enlightenment and particularly to purify many negative karmas, disease and problems. Many difficult things that are not easy to get rid of can be purified with this mantra, and particularly we can develop compassion for all living beings—numberless hell beings, numberless preta beings, numberless animals, numberless human beings, numberless suras, numberless asuras and numberless intermediate state beings. That compassion for all beings is what makes us achieve peerless happiness up to enlightenment, to be able to do perfect works for others.

Please continue your life with a good heart to others, as you already have. This is where all the satisfaction comes from.

With much love and prayers...
