Writing the Prajnaparamita Sutra

Rinpoche made this comment about a student who had been writing the Prajnaparamita Sutra every day for over twelve years.

Every day writing the Prajnaparamita Sutra, even one word, is more precious than making skies of offerings to numberless buddhas. Writing just one word is more than making skies of offerings to numberless buddhas, so you collect more merit than that.

Sutras for Peace and Harmony in Brazil and the World

When Rinpoche visited Brazil in 2015, he advised recitation of the following sutras for peace, happiness and success.

Reading these sutras is good for Brazil and also for the whole world:

Of course, when you dedicate the merits of these practices, it doesn’t only have to be for Brazil; it can be for the whole world, for peace and harmony and success.

Positive Imprints to Realize Emptiness Quickly

Date of Advice:
Date Posted:

A student wrote to Rinpoche after reciting the Heart Sutra one thousand times for another student who had died recently. Rinpoche sent this advice.

My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,
A billon, zillion, trillion thanks for reciting the Heart Sutra, not only for that student but for yourself to be free from samsara quickly.

This leaves positive imprints for you to realize emptiness quickly, to eliminate quickly the root of samsara—the ignorance holding the I, the aggregates, as truly existent, while it is not, while it has never been that way.

You should be great, enjoying, because the person you were doing prayers for has already been born and will be wealthy or is wealthy.

I hope to see you soon. Either with the same body or a different body, maybe as a puppy. I could see you maybe as a puppy, hopefully a nice puppy that gives more pleasure to people even though it doesn’t sing.

With much love and prayers ...

Thanks for Reading the Long Life Sutra

A student had recited the Long Life Sutra fifty times and asked Rinpoche what practices to do next.

My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,
I was very happy to hear news about you.

Continue with the Long Life Sutra and also read Chanting the Names of Manjushri if you can. This is a most profound, extensive teaching, especially on tantra, taught by the Buddha—it is not Hindu tantra, but tantra taught by the Buddha—and this causes us to achieve buddhahood, the peerless happiness, the total cessation of obscurations and completion of realizations, quickly.

I am so happy that you enjoyed and were able to read the Long Life Sutra fifty times. That is incredible. Thank you very much.

With much love and prayers ...

The Virtuous Friend

This quote from the Stainless Sky Sutra was translated by Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche at Root Institute, Bodhgaya, February 19, 2014. Scribe: Ven Sarah Thresher.

“Ananda, the tathagatas do not appear to the sentient beings but the virtuous friend completely appears and reveals the Dharma and plants the seed of liberation; because of that, cherish the virtuous friend as more special than the tathagatas.”

Reading Sutras

Date Posted:

Rinpoche sent the following letter to a student. He had previously sent her three sutras (the Sutra of Golden Light, the Sanghata Sutra, and Vajra Cutter Sutra). After reading the Sanghata Sutra, she wrote to Rinpoche with a question: “Where is the sutra in the sutra? Which part is the sutra?”

My dearest Rachel,
I am very happy that you are very happy and that the card I sent you brought you so much happiness. Now all the companies that make the cards are so meaningful, because they are making some sentient being in the corner of the world happy.

I am very happy to hear that you immediately rushed to read the sutras. That made me so extremely happy. That means you are truly a very devoted student, maybe not quite truly existent. Please keep reading the sutras, even one line or one page a day. It has so much meaning.

Your friend mentioned you called and had questions about the sutras. (Sorry, this was some time ago. Sorry for the long delay in replying). I went through this as well, just like what you said, quite a few times, thinking that there was something else. But, actually, when the Buddha is talking in the sutras, that is the sutra.

Reading the sutras will help you so much. It is the easiest way to direct your life toward enlightenment and toward enlightening all sentient beings, so it has so much benefit, even benefit for your nose.

Take good care, with bodhicitta, as I am sure you will. Take care with emptiness.

With much love and prayers, and I hope to see you soon.

Lama Zopa

PS. One time I tried to call you, but the telephone had a lady speaking saying you were not there. I think I tried to call six times to leave a message. I don’t know if it worked, as I was dialing myself, so I’m not sure what was happening. Maybe you were in samadhi or off in another world to liberate others.
